As many of you may know, I have no sense of smell. So while I miss out on that component of alexis’ skills, her beautiful, bright and fun soaps are a feast for the eyes. They feel amazing on the skin as well!

Artists in support of the movement for Black lives

Physically distanced community art march highlighting local Black artists, performances and craft activities followed by a neighborhood march in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. Supplies provided and sanitized for covid safety.

I had the pleasure of working with one of my oldest and dearest friends Sarah Junke to bring my speaker piece to the University of South Florida’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. At her suggestion, I also curated a small exhibition to go along with the work. I asked some of my favorite artists to respond the the prompt “What does Reproductive Justice mean to you?”

I am excited to be participating in the James May Gallery Working Pots II exhibition.  The show was juried by the amazing Birdie Boone.

Saturday brought an exciting surprise when I saw that I had earned one of the several purchase awards.

Class Description: Since the beginning of human culture, people have formed clay to create functional and sculptural objects.  From water storage to teapots, fermentation weights to decorative housewares. this class will introduce students to the fundamentals of hand built ceramics, allowing them to create objects for decoratin or use.  Students will also learn decorative techniques using colored slips and underglazes.

Each story of accessing abortion in the U.S. is unique and important.  According to the Guttmacher institute, in 2011 (the most recent year that statistics are available for) 10,690 people accessed abortion services in Oregon.  10,690 Wild Flowers honors each of those people’s experience, as well as each Oregonian who, for myriad reasons was unable to access the healthcare they needed, with a ceramic flower.  While Oregon has many safe guards in place that other states, such as my home state of Florida, do not, many are still unable to receive much needed healthcare because of restrictions due to the Hyde Amendment, barriers because of gender markers, immigration status and more.    Each flower is made during a community discussion/workshop hosted in collaboration with local reproductive justice organizations in which we will discuss the impact of these restrictions and the recently introduced House Bill 2232 or The Reproductive Health Equity Act.  Handmade flower bricks and vases filled with these flowers have been placed in the gallery and throughout Portland in reproductive health and justice organization’s offices and local businesses.  The goal is to make 10,690 ceramic flowers, each of which is for sale for $1.  All money raised is donated to organization in Portland working specifically folks who fall into these access gaps.  A zine is available in the gallery with information about the project, partner organizations and contributions from collaborators.
