stress.

right now is kind of hard.  i am getting benefits starting dec. 1st.  so i need to work at least 25 hours a week.  usually i am working more, because i need the money, but i am trying to scale back.  i am at the clay studio one day a week and at creative clay one day a week.  at the moment, when i finish working, i just want to chill, and not think about making work.  i’m feeling a lot of frustration.  i want to have a whole day to work in the studio.  and i think i need a whole day to do nothing and to be completely alone but there are not enough days in the week.

i applied and was accepted to kara walker tome’s next show 10 x 10 in west palm beach in mid november.  i am creating a large scale sculpture installation of a garden out of white glazed earthenware.  i have the picture in my head and am so excited to work on it.  on top of the clay sculpture i’m going to add materials like gravel, crocheted yarn, sand, etc.  i just want there to be a lot of layers.  i worked on the mock up tuesday and the main layout is done.  now i just need to create the main sculpture pieces so i can start adding detail.  i am so lazy, i just wanted to do detail work.  i spent a few hours coiling the other day, and then ended up balling it all up and pinching the mock up out of it.  i just wanted to warm up.  once i really took the layout in i realized that i’m going to have to make some temporary slump molds.  i think those big exercise bowls will work and maybe some big trashcans and/or plastic storage bins.

this means war

around this time in 2004 i had the opportunity to create a collaborative installation with agatha wara in the miami space the basfisher invitational.  it’s title was “this means war”, a line spoken by franklin deleno roosevelt and made famous by the cartoon character bugs bunny.

Tempura-a-rama and mountain veggies.

there are a plethora of random interesting looking veggies in the super market called sansai or mountain vegetables. i have been a little intimidated to try cooking some of them, but the other day when masa and i went grocery store we found, on sale, kogomi (ostrich fern) and fukinoto (giant butterbur). we also picked up some renkon (lotus root), carrots, eggplant and mushrooms and decided to do tempura.

actually, that’s all kind of a lie, i saw these veggies on sale and wanted to get them cuz they looked cool, masa was like, what are those?  and i was like, i have no idea, but i’ll look them up on the internet.  in the end, the fukinoto tasted terrible and we decided to do tempura because we had the other veggies in the fridge and we do have a tempura nabe (pot) after all.  we thought the bitter fukinoto would taste good fried but we were WRONG.

Ostrich fern: there’s a whole lotta fern up in there, raw, stretched out and tempura-ed.   Unlike the fukinoto, the kogomi or ostrich fern was great!  very densely green tasting and just overall cool.

Pot for cooking tempura and finished product.  We made tempura bananas with nutella for dessert.  yum.

My boyfriend’s crafty, yo.

masa, my wonderful partner is a huge geek for baseball.  and this summer when he visited the u.s. with me he wouldn’t stop singing the mcdonald’s commercial, “i’m lovin’ it!”.  i can remember driving down the street in okinawa a couple of years ago and him pointing to the navi screen and saying read this.  in my beginner japanese i proceed to sound out ma-ku-do-na-ru-do about 3 times before i realize that i’m saying mcdonald’s.  he thought it was funny.  anyway, his favorite team is the chiba lotte marines.  he, crafty boy that he is, married his love of all things geek and made this shirt. dcf_0256.jpg
he used really soft iron on that stretches with the t-shirt.

O shogatsu cards.

at the beginning of the year in japan people send each other post cards with info and updates.  i’m kind of lazy so i made these cards for my coworkers only and handed them out instead of sending them.  not very japanese but oh well.

it is the year of the mouse but i made it the year of the octopus cuz that’s the way i roll.p1010464.jpg p1010471.jpg
